We are all born with our own unique genetic make up or genotype that has been handed down from our ancestors.
How we age, what diseases we will get in our life time are determined by how our genotype interacts with the
environment that we live in or phenotype. Phenotype can be defined by the foods that we eat, the air that we
breath, the water that we drink. It is related to how much exercise we get, our weight, the stress that we are
under, toxins that we are exposed to or basically the life that we choose to lead. We cannot control our gene
pool (genotype) handed down from our parents and grandparents, but we can control the environment we live in
Healthy aging is all about optimizing that environment. It means making sure we are at our ideal body weight,
our blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugars are all controlled. It means limiting exposure to environmental
toxins like cigarette smoke, heavy metals like lead, mercury. It means avoiding foods like cattle, poultry, fish
that have been exposed to antibiotics, growth hormone or heavy metals. It means avoiding fruits and vegetables that
are exposed to pesticides or have been genetically modified. It means controlling our stress, getting proper sleep
(6-8 hours per night), getting enough exercise (3-5 hours per week). Healthy aging involves optimizing our sex
hormones, cortisol levels and neurotransmitters.
Obviously, many of you are already doing this. However, if you need help with any of these issues, Dr. Emdur’s
